“New Year, New Intentions” My Cannabis Journey for 2024

Wat Dhammaram Buddhist Temple 7059 W 75th St, Chicago, IL

NYE has always been a very interesting time of year for me personally. I get to celebrate both my partners and brothers birthday since they’re on the same day. But looking back on my experiences with ringing in the new year it was mostly made up of partying, drinking, and the undeniable hangover the next morning. Not this year…the family and I spent some quality time at the Buddhist Temple which we do ever year being that our lineage goes back to Thailand.

Reflecting on the last year over great food, a program of songs and dances, then ending the evening in prayer led by the monk was a beautiful way to start the new year. This experience was so unique for me that it motivated me to go into a “monk mode” of my own between January and March. If you either know me or have followed my content online I am adamant about maintaining healthy relationships, especially with my body and what I consume.

If by now you’re asking yourself, ok what does this have to do with cannabis? Let me explain. I’ve been consuming for half my life and over the last decade to specifically find relief for a spine ailment along with my mental health. Cannabis has done wonders for improving my quality of life but during my time of reflection I realized how much of a habitual act it became for me. Wake up, midday, before bed (smoking, edibles, using vapes) and in most cases all at the same time.

Now let’s be clear, cannabis has less than a 10% chance of becoming addictive according to this article published by the CDC - Addiction (Marijuana or Cannabis Use Disorder). My interest in taking a tolerance break from both cannabis and alcohol (along with some lifestyle changes) is an effort to reset my whole being. I can’t stress enough how important it is to listen to both your mind and body to make adjustments where necessary. The first few weeks have been a bit difficult in the sense of not having that “immediate” relief and having to use other resources. Which now involves daily mediation, journaling, and engaging in content that aligns with my core beliefs (ex. The Daily Stoic). So if you’ve found yourself a bit dependent on other means to find some consolation, I’m here to tell you that you’re not alone. It’s a journey worth fighting and nothing is more important than protecting your well-being. This is not a conversation of what is “right or wrong” but setting healthy boundaries when it comes to the life you want for yourself. I realize that cannabis will always be part of my life and this experience will improve our relationship. I’m grateful to have loved ones who are supporting me along the way on this road to peace and calm.

Here’s to a great 2024!
